Every FolioPage site is reachable at a free subdomain such as janedoe.folio.page, on every plan, with SSL included. It is your site's address from the moment you publish, and it keeps working as a fallback even after you connect a domain of your own.
How your subdomain is chosen
When you sign up, FolioPage picks a subdomain based on your name so your first site is live without any extra steps. When you add another site from the dashboard, you choose the Subdomain yourself in the Add a new site form, and the form tells you the full address the site will live at.
You can change a subdomain at any time from the Domain page.
Change your subdomain
- Open your site in the dashboard and choose Domain in the sidebar.
- The top card shows the address your site is live at. Click Update.
- Type the new name in the Subdomain field. As you type, the page checks whether the name is free and shows a green tick when it is available.
- Click Save changes.
The new address works straight away. Your old subdomain stops working immediately and becomes available for anyone else to claim, so update any links you have shared (social bios, email signatures, business cards) as soon as you rename.
Warning: You can change a subdomain once every 24 hours. After saving, the form stays locked and shows the date and time you can change it again. Pick carefully before you save.
What names are allowed
A subdomain is the part before .folio.page. It must:
- use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only, with no hyphen at the start or end;
- be at least 5 characters long on the Free plan, or at least 3 characters on Pro and Max;
- not be taken by another site;
- not be a reserved or inappropriate word. Common technical names such as
www,mail,adminorblog, and FolioPage's own names, are reserved.
The form explains which rule a name breaks, so you can adjust and try again.
Tip: Short, memorable and lowercase works best: your name, your studio's name, or the name you use on social media. Your subdomain is also used in the sharing links FolioPage generates, so treat it as part of your brand.
Using your own domain instead
On the Pro and Max plans you can connect a domain you already own, such as www.janedoe.com. While the custom domain is being verified, your site stays live on the subdomain; once the domain is active, visitors who open the subdomain are redirected to it. See Connect a domain you own.
If you later switch back to the subdomain, or a site moves to the Free plan, the subdomain becomes the main address again with nothing else to set up.
