Build your site menu

Add, reorder and nest the links in your site's main menu, link to pages, apps and outside sites, and hide items without deleting them.

On this page
  1. Open the navigation editor
  2. Add an item
  3. Reorder and nest items
  4. Edit, hide or delete an item
  5. How many items you can have
  6. Keep links working

Your site has one main menu, shown in the header on every page. You manage its items on the Navigation page: what each item says, where it goes, what order they come in and which ones open a dropdown. How the menu looks (template, fonts, colors) is set in the Design editor instead; see header, footer and menu styles.

Open the navigation editor

  1. Open your site in the dashboard.
  2. Choose Navigation in the sidebar, under Appearance.

The sidebar lists your menu items as a tree; the main area previews your site so you can see the result straight away. The pill above the preview switches between Edit, Desktop and Mobile. In Edit, clicking an item in the preview opens it for editing. Desktop and Mobile show the site as visitors see it at that screen size - and the menu really works there, so you can click through your items and check that every link lands where you expect. Click Edit to go back to building.

Add an item

  1. Click Add nav item at the top of the list.
  2. Enter a Label - the text visitors see.
  3. Under Link, pick what the item points to:
Type What to enter
Page Choose one of your pages from the list
URL A full web address such as https://example.com
Anchor A section of your homepage, such as #contact (see link a menu item to a section)
App One of your enabled apps, such as Portfolio or Blog
  1. Optionally turn on Open in new tab (useful for outside links) and choose whether the item is Visible.
  2. To put the item inside another item's dropdown, pick that item under Show inside dropdown. Leave it at the top level otherwise.
  3. Click Add.

The App type only appears once at least one app with its own page is enabled. App links follow the app automatically: if you later rename the app's address, the menu keeps working, and if you disable the app, its menu item is left out of the live menu until you enable it again.

Reorder and nest items

Drag the handle at the left of an item to move it. Dragging up or down changes the order; dragging to the right while you move it places it inside the item above, which turns that item into a dropdown. Dropdowns can nest up to three levels deep.

You can also move an item by editing it and changing Show inside dropdown. Items with children show a small arrow to collapse or expand them in the list.

Edit, hide or delete an item

Hover an item to reveal its actions:

  • Edit item opens the same dialog you used to add it. Change anything and click Save.
  • Hide from nav keeps the item but takes it out of the menu on your site; Show in nav brings it back. Handy for a page that is not ready yet.
  • To remove an item, open Edit item and click Delete, then confirm. Deleting an item also deletes everything inside its dropdown.

How many items you can have

Plan Menu items
Free 5
Pro 50
Max 100

Every item counts, including those inside dropdowns and hidden ones.

  • If you change a page's web address on the Pages side, menu items that used the Page type still point to the old address. Edit those items and pick the page again.
  • A new page is not added to the menu automatically. Add it here when it is ready.

Changes save as soon as you click Add or Save. To put them in front of visitors, click Update live site; see why your changes do not show on the live site yet.
