What happens when a site moves to Free

How to move a site to the Free plan after its subscription ends, what you may need to clear first, and which features stop while your content stays.

A site moves to the Free plan only when you choose to move it. This happens after a subscription has ended: you cancelled it and the paid period ran out, a payment failed for good, or a refund was issued. Until you act, the site stays inactive and visitors see a notice instead of your pages. Moving to Free puts it back online, within Free limits.

Step 1: open Plan & Usage

  1. Open the site in the dashboard.
  2. Choose Plan & Usage in the sidebar, under Manage.

When the subscription has ended, the card at the top reads Your subscription has ended. with a Move to Free plan button. The Free plan card below offers the same action.

Step 2: clear anything Free does not allow

  1. Click Move to Free plan. The dialog Move to the Free plan? opens and checks the site against the Free limits.
  2. If everything fits, it tells you the site is all clear and fits within the Free plan limits. Go to step 3.
  3. If not, it lists what to fix under Clear these first:. Each row has a Manage button that takes you to the right place in the dashboard. Fix the items, come back, and click Recheck.

The check covers these things, each with its Free limit:

Check Free allows
Pages 5
Navigation items 5
Media files 50
Storage 100 MB
Portfolio items 10
Portfolio categories 3
Custom domain Not included - disconnect it first

Tip: Disconnecting a custom domain does not delete anything, and the DNS record at your provider can stay in place. Your site lives on its folio.page address again, and reconnecting after a later upgrade is a single click. See Connect a domain you own.

Step 3: confirm

Click Move to Free. The site is back online right away on the Free plan, and your billing history stays in your account so you can still open past invoices.

What stops working on Free

These paid features are switched off the moment the site is on Free. Whatever you set up while paying is remembered, so upgrading again brings it all back without redoing anything.

  • "Powered by FolioPage" link. It shows in the footer again, even if you had hidden it.
  • Custom code. Your custom CSS and HTML are kept in the dashboard but are no longer applied to the live site.
  • Premium sections. They are hidden on the live site. You can still see, edit and delete them in the page editor.
  • Resume. The live resume shows at most 6 sections with 3 entries each, in the default template. The rest of your content is kept.
  • Blog. Blog is available only on Max; you cannot add posts or switch the app on while the site is on Free.
  • Password-protected pages. Pages that are already protected keep their password. You cannot protect new pages.
  • Direct outbound links. Links to other websites go through a short redirect on your site and get a "nofollow" hint for search engines. Visitors still land where you sent them.
  • Contact forms. Free sites do not receive form submissions.

What you keep

Everything you created stays in place: pages, sections, media, portfolio items, links, navigation, design and settings. Limits that are not part of the check above are not applied backwards: a page that already has more than 10 sections keeps them, and a links page with more than 5 links keeps them. You just cannot add more until the site is within the Free limit again.

Going back to a paid plan

Open Plan & Usage and pick Upgrade to Pro (Monthly), Upgrade to Max (Yearly) or another plan and period. Custom code, hidden branding and premium sections come back immediately. See Upgrade a site to Pro or Max.
