Reset a site to a fresh template

Rebuild an existing site from a different template or a blank slate while keeping its address, media library, subscription and the content you choose.

Reset replaces a site's pages, navigation and design with a fresh start from any template, or from a blank slate, without creating a new site. The address, plan and media library stay where they are, and you decide which of your own content comes along. It is the way to try a different template on a site you already have.

What a reset keeps and replaces

Then there are six things you choose to keep or let go. Every toggle starts on, so nothing of yours is removed unless you turn it off:

When a toggle is on, your version of that content stays and the template's version of it is skipped entirely. When it is off, your content is removed and the template's comes in instead.

Before you start

  • A reset cannot be undone. If you are not sure, you can create a second site to experiment on instead; see Start from a template.
  • If the site is published, the new pages and design go live the moment the reset finishes. Unpublish first from Settings if you would rather work on it privately and publish again later.
  • Resetting does not change your plan. A site on Free stays on Free; a Pro or Max subscription continues untouched.

Step 1: open the reset dialog

  1. Open the site in the dashboard and, under Manage in the sidebar, click Settings.
  2. Scroll to Danger zone and click Reset site.

Step 2: choose a starting point and what to keep

  1. Under Start from, pick Blank or one of the templates.
  2. Under Keep from the current site, turn off anything you want replaced by the template's content. Leave the rest on.
  3. Type your site's subdomain name (the part before .folio.page) into the confirmation field, exactly as shown.
  4. Click Reset site.

The dashboard reloads into the editor with the rebuilt site open.

After the reset

  • Read through the new pages and swap the template's sample text and images for your own. Sample images from a template are displayed on your site but do not take up space in your media library.
  • Check Navigation: the menus are the template's, so add links to any app pages you kept.
  • Open Design to confirm your logo and colors, especially if you turned off Logo & favicon.
  • If the site was live, visitors already see the new version. If you unpublished beforehand, turn Publish site back on in Settings when you are ready.

Warning: Turning off a toggle deletes that content from the site for good. The media files behind your portfolio and links stay in your library, but the items themselves, their descriptions and their order are gone.

Reset or delete?

Reset is for keeping the site and changing its content. If you want the site itself gone, use Delete site instead; see Delete or restore a site.
